i looked bad; did you?

Dear fellow fashion bloggers,

Most of you are younger than me, a fact for which you should be thankful. Because this means you were not a teenager in the 90s. Ah, the 90s, that bland, neutral, "simple" decade. The ten years when fashion took a nosedive into non-existence.

That dull, insipid, "basic", boring, beige era. It started off with grunge and didn't get much better (not that I have problem with "grunge inspired" looks, but the whole look? Come on...)

The 90s simply lacked style. In many ways the decade was a long drawn out khaki objection to the 80s (a decade one could never call boring).

At least that is how I see it.

But I am starting to wonder if my having been a teenager in the 90s has distorted my view of 90s "style" (or lack thereof).

I mean, just because I looked bad didn't mean everyone else did. Just because I wore men's plaid shirts with oversize BEIGE jeans and refused to tuck anything in EVER, doesn't mean that there weren't some clever fashionistas that made the most of the 90s "vegetable lasagna" fashion.

I mean, okay, I live in a smallish city, in a smallish country, and well, I admit - it's sort of a hick town - , so, everyone around me was also dressing, bland, bad, boring, you get it. Neutral eye shadows, nothing else, no "interesting" hair, no goth style (oh, it would have been so fun to be a teenager when "goth" was in!). One really had very little choice but to look boring in the 90s.

Ah, that's the mortal sin of the 90s, the fashion of that decade was boring, it was too cautious, it lacked kahunas.

So my real question is: was it just me? Was it just my pre-internet hick town perception? Or were the 90s really that bad? I'm curious to hear other people's opinions.

Oh, and here is a picture of me committing the 90s fashion sin of "tucking in":

outfit details:

wide leg pants Gap: $ 60
thrifted blouse: $ 3
cropped metallic blazer: $ 4
shoes Roberto Vianni: $ 30
Tiffany & Co. bracelet: gift

Heart: Kimberellie (who by the way, just noticed she is wearing what can only be called "beige" pants in this photo--were it the 90s, my shirt would be beige too).

ps. notice the babies in the second photo? It’s kind of like “Where’s Waldo” only with babies.

  1. i thought that about the nineties until i started watching back-to-back episodes of the original 'beverly hills:90210,' which, granted, doesn't showcase the best-of-the-fashion-best, but some of those outfits certainly aren't boring! nineties music is worse, by far. talk about lacking kahunas...

  3. I had some horrible fashion in the 90's but also wore some cute stuff. The baggy look I sometimes wore was awful. At the time I thought it sure beat the 80's though now I totally rock some 80's finds. It is funny when people with great style, (always younger than me), are obsessed with it.
