I have some new shopping rules. I will tell you them:
1. I am only allowed to buy ONE (new), yes one, article of clothing a month.
2. I am only allowed to spend 25 dollars a month thrifting.
3. For every thrifted item I purchase I have to give away/donate two articles of clothing from my monster, I mean hoard, I mean closet.
Yes. I have a problem. A clothes problem. And it just keeps getting more problematic. You see, I keep running out of hangers. You see, I am truly afraid my clothes will become a sentient clothes monster and smother me in the middle of the night.
So these are my new rules. Only ONE new article of clothing a month. You heard it here first folks (unless of course you are a delightful real life person who is treated to my monologues via the telephone).
You see, it makes me sad to think I own things I don't appreciate. So I figure this way I will wear more of the clothes I buy because I will be buying less clothes. And also I will be wearing the clothes that I own more often as well (again due to less clothes, sigh, *sniffle*, be brave Kimberellie).
It's just, that, well, you see: I LOVE my clothes. I really do. I have such a hard time parting with any of them. And well, I also LOVE shopping. And I have a hard time not shopping. Only, it's getting a little out of hand. And because I get stuff so cheaply my wallet never minds. So I keep getting stuff. Only...if I counted the number of blazers, tops, skirts, sweaters, etcetera, I own, well, it would be downright embarrassing, not to mention time consuming (also you would see that my fear of a clothes monster spontaneously animating and smothering me is wholly valid).
So to have, I must lose. The more I buy, the less I'll have. It's brilliant really. And it just may work. BTW, my inspiration for this idea came from the lovely Alecto of circle meets square. She once spoke about buying only one item a month and I thought: I want to be like that.
But uh, don't get me wrong. This won't last forever. 6 months for sure, a year tops. This is strictly a temporary extreme measures must be taken or my closet will explode diffuse the danger sleep with your nightlight on and one eye open until the clothes monster fear subsides scenario here. You weren't thinking I was about to become a minimilist where you?
So, clothes, listen up: until the time comes for you to pass on (to another owner) I will still wear you. I will still give you each another chance, another opportunity to impress upon me your absolute necessity. Until the time of your tossing, I will even love you. And before your passing, I will make you semi-famous by posting pictures of you on the internet. Do not worry. As of right now, I still look upon you with favor. You will be worn. Unless of course you really are horrid. In that case, I'm just gonna straight out toss you.*

*I'm glad my clothes don't actually read my blog. Talk like this would enrage a clothes monster.
well, good luck with that. you sure are a brave girl. I have the hardest time letting go of old clothes. I actually have two bags full of clothes I want to give away and they've been sitting by my closet for a month now.
ReplyDeleteGood luck to you! I'm having a hard time getting rid of old clothes. They have way too much sentimental value for me so I keep things for years after I no longer will wear them. It's a terrible habit.
ReplyDeleteThis was such a funny post. Can I just say that I love your blog.
ReplyDeleteFor a while I was discarding one item of clothing for every one I bought, but I quickly ran out of discard-able things because I don't own a whole lot. But I do have a lot of old raggedy socks. So I'm discarding THOSE as I get new items of clothing. Not that I am giving you ideas on how to cheat or anything.
Good luck! those are some strict rules!
ReplyDeleteI've recently thrown out/donated 2 bin bags full of clothes - need to take your challenge up also!

Ok, this whole blog? Was like if Calvin & Hobbes were girls with too many clothes.
ReplyDeleteYou made me smile with your monster talk.
Hello, Beautiful!
ReplyDeleteGood luck with those rules but remember, rules were made to be broken and you look like a naughty girl who may be tempted!!
I've had a clear-out recently but I've already filled the space...arghh! I can resist anything but thrift shopping temptation.

good luck! I love my clothes too, but I quickly get bored of many items and so I clean out my closet several times a year. As much as I love my clothes, I rarely keep anything for longer than 2 years. I like shopping, so I'd rather get rid of things than not shop. I am currently having the same problem with hangers though, so we'll see what else I get rid of.
ReplyDeleteAlso, I'm really interested in seeing your closet.
Good luck!! This is going to be difficult, but at least you can blog about the journey. Can't wait to see what one new piece you end up buying each month.
ReplyDeleteWe are watching you. And there is no way you will be able to hide purchases from your readers, because surely you won't be able to resist showing us whatever piece of awesomeness it is that would make you break your rules.
ReplyDeleteSorry to be so abruptly creepy but I figured since you are scared of your clothes pile becoming self aware, an already self aware audience may keep you in line as well.
OMG Girl!!!! COngrats on the Chictopia cover!!!! You go!!!
ReplyDeletemy closet is practically barren, it feels like. but, somehow, it's completely relieving. now i don't know what to do with myself so i'm forcing myself to be creative. it keeps the buying monsters at bay haha. BUT if the thrift stores around here were HALF as amazing as yours i think i would be feeling slightly overwhelmed haha. so i can't blame you :-) you're so lucky!
ReplyDeleteSounds like a good resolution. I can help you with it by taking any of those items that you are giving away.
ReplyDeleteI would feel terrible if the clothes monster were to get out of hand and I hadn't offered to help tame it!
